Gold and Bronze at BUCS Criterium Championships 2019

The final weekend of April saw an exciting finish to the BUCS Cycling season with the BUCS Road Race Championship and the BUCS Criterium Championship. The events took place at York Sport Cycle Circuit with Writtle University College students, Tom Cullen and George Jones, representing WUC Sport and the WUC cycling club over the 27th-28th April.

The Road Race route was the same as the previous year on the Bulmer Circuit, running counter-clockwise from Sheriff Hutton HQ. Unfortunately, the road race didn’t go quite to plan for the boys with George stating “the Road Race Championships on Saturday had been a slightly underwhelming affair, with neither Tom or I quite achieving the results we'd hoped to. With this in mind, together with a number of very strong riders on the start sheet, our expectations for the crit race were somewhat modest.’

With the road race put to the back of their minds, Writtle cyclists Tom and George went on to achieve fantastic results in the BUCS Criterium Championships 2019 the following day! Tom said “the early part of the race was hard and very aggressive, many riders attacked to try breakaway from the bunch” but after 25 minutes, Tom managed to ride tactically off the front just after a hard chase to catch

the pre-race favourite and they worked well together extending their lead to 20 seconds over the chasing bunch.

After 15 minutes of just the 2 riders, 4 more riders caught up including Writtle team mate George! The 6 riders worked well together, eventually building up an unassailable lead over the bunch and a 2-minute lead on the good other a chasing group of 6.

With 4 laps to go the tactics began to really kick in and the group cohesion started to break down. Going into the final lap Tom made sure he was 2nd into the final corner with George behind him nicely in 3rd.

Tom opened up his sprint with 200m to go and accelerated away from the others to take a fantastic win for the Writtle University College cycling team, closely followed by team mate George who claimed 3rd place!

Tom said “It was a great day for the Writtle University College Cycling team” with George adding “it was a great feeling to be able to put two of Writtle's cyclists on the podium!"
