Khai Mhlanga Takes First Place in Two Championships

Writtle University College (WUC) student Khahisa Mhlanga triumphed in two championships. The experienced runner came first in the 3000m at Middlesex University Open Student Championships on 4 December, and also took first place at the London Universities & Colleges Championships on 24 November.

This isn’t Khahisa’s first big win. The BSc Sports and Exercise Performance student represented team GB for the fifth time in December 2018, competing at the Under-20s Cross-Country Championships in Tilburg, the Netherlands, finishing seventh and playing an integral part in GB’s Gold-medal-winning junior women’s team.

When injury put a temporary halt to Khahisa’s plans for 2019, she refused to give up her running career. The BSc Sports and Exercise Performance student at Writtle University College decided to embark on a nine-month recovery programme, overseen by WUC sports lecturer, Mark Williams. Khahisa said: “The program has been so effective that I recently gained a personal best in the 3000m without having done a season of training.”

The Middlesex Championships were a particularly special event for Khahisa as it was the first time she had represented Writtle University College at a sporting event. She said: “The atmosphere was great and it feels so good to be back racing. I’ve been looking forward to representing WUC and I loved wearing the vest. I look forward to doing it again!”
